Breton Bay Youth Tourney Recap

Written by Jason Wynn

The Youth Levels Tournament was held at Breton Bay Golf and Country Club, on August 7-8.  In the Purple Group (advanced), Robert Bishop (Great Mills HS), Joey McGowan (St. Mary’s Ryken HS), and Josh Levitas (St. Mary’s Ryken HS) all finished 1-1.  Bishop was awarded the championship by default.

In the Blue Group (intermediate level), Adam Goff took the title, while Elliot Etter edged out Scott Flood in the third place match.

Samantha Schwalbe captured the Green Group (for newer players) for her first tournament title, followed by Jake Dodges, Jordon Martin, and TJ Ball.

In 2010 the SMCTA Board of Directors, committed to growing local Junior Team Tennis participation, approved a significant increase to the Junior Tennis budget.  The nearly $5000 commitment, which does not include 100's of hours volunteered by roughly 13 coaches and parents, far surpasses that of any other SMCTA program this year.

Helping to fund this increase was a $2000 Community Development grant from USTA Maryland.

The results?  This year's JTT league consisted of 66 youth, a 100% increase in participation from 2009, and put the St. Mary's County JTT program at 6th largest in the state, out of 13 the counties with JTT programs.  In addition, St. Mary's is sending 2 teams to the Mid-Atlantic Sectional Championships, the State Champion U18 Intermediates, and State Finalists U10 Intermediates.
